VIRTUES Over 250 years ago, Benjamin Franklin realized that even the best attempts at changing bad habits brought unsatisfactory results. Thinking this through Ben came up with a brilliantly simple self improvement program that works as follows: "A weeks strict attention to each of the 13 virtues successively." After a thirteen-week cycle he'd begin again, putting a full four weeks effort every year into mastering each habit. Ben largely credited this experiment as the key to his very successful life. The 13 virtues (when worked with disciplined attention) is the greatest gift from wise old Ben to you and me.
